Dr. Charles J. Shepard, 79, of 361 S. Columbia Av, a pioneer in the treatment of many skin diseases and first dermatologist in central Ohio, died Wednesday at his home after an illness of several months.
He maintained offices at 150 E. Broad St. with his son, Dr. Joseph H. Shepard, whose home is at 390 S. Parkview Av.
Since 1940, he had been professor emeritus in dermatology at Ohio State University. There he had served 40 years as a specialist in dermatology. He had been in Columbus 52 years.
Following his graduation from Bellevue Medical College in New York City in 1896, Dr. Shepard was in general practice four years in Columbus. Then he went to Germany, to study under Dr. Max Joseph in Berlin and Dr. Neisser, internationally-known dermatologist in Breslau, Germany. Upon return to Columbus he started practice in his special field and served as radiologist at Mt. Carmel Hospital until 1925.
Dr. Shepard was a member of and past president of Columbus Academy of Medicine and of Cleveland Dermatology Society. He also was a member of Ohio State and American Medical Associations and a member and one of the founder's group of American Academy of Dermatology and Syphilology.
Dr. Shepard also was a member of Bexley Methodist church, Goodale Lodge, F and A M; Scottish Rite and Aladdin Temple of Shrine.
In addition to his son, Dr. Shepard is survived by his wife, Mabel; daughter, Jane H., at home; brother, James of Columbus; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Coe of Columbus and Mrs. Grace McManigal of Cleveland, and three grandchildren.
Friends may call at Carroll Weir funeral home Wednesday evening after 6 o'clock. Private funeral service will be there Thursday afternoon, and entombment will be in Green Lawn Abbey. Omission of flowers is requested.
