GEORGE W. SMITH, OWNER OF SKATING RINK, DIES
George W. Smith, 87, of 2041 Fairfax Rd, owner of the skating rink and dance hall at 4th St. and Northwood Av., died Monday at his home. Since retiring in July because of illness, he had been under a physician's care.
He built Smith's Iuka Gardens, the amusement spot which has entertained two Columbus generations, 47 years ago and managed it until his retirement.
Mr. Smith, who came here while a boy with his family from Syracuse, N. Y., had operated dancing studios here many years, one at Gay and High Sts. and later above the old B. F. Keith's Theater.
His dance hall was built soon after he purchased the land on N. 4th St. in 1901, and the roller rink about a year later.
Mr. Smith, who is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adele Smith, was a member of Humboldt Lodge No. 476 F and A M, Aladdin Temple of the Shrine and the Elks Lodge.
Funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Schoedinger funeral home. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after Thursday.
